Passion or money ??

Well, the discussion again, more or less, pertains to the same question, which perplexes most of us all through our life.

Passion or Money ?

Some careers are intrinsically more promising and paying than the others.Should one's choice be based totally upon which career is more paying.

--- I had a friend of mine,Hari(name changed) whose only aim in life was marketing. He was the one,who was really crazy about it,could go upto any limits to market out things--a salesman,by instinct.

Now,as it happens with most of us,he never knew what his real USP was, when he was at 12th and so had nothing better to do ,except to opt for a Btech or Medical entrance, opted for the former, ended up in a Btech institute of repute and finally ended up in IT.He worked there for an year , quit after that and went for an MBA(again to a very good institute). This time,he had made up his mind,to pursue marketing ,no matter what.

But ,soon after he entered the college,he discovered ,that most of the fat salary jobs were centred around finance.

Now he had two options

A) to stay with his passion, wait for a couple of years to try out his hand at marketing and find out how much it pays in the end.

B) to Pick up finance, obviously, because it seemed much more lucrative to him(in terms of the huge moolah and foreign offers)

He turns back to his seniors to have their opinion, who come up with different opinions about the same and finally taking the more lucrative course ,he ends up picking finance.

Now,fortunately ,he lands himself in a good investment bank,is able to make a big buck for himself but that longing for marketing still pesters him.....

Now the questions is :--

How radical was his choice ?? Well, keeping in mind all those financial returns, his friends always said he had made the right choice. But,somewhere deep down his heart,he still craves for his passion...........

I wonder if you're even allowed to do what you love in India? Unless you're really rich and can afford to indulge.

Even I want to do marketing or advertising in my MBA later. Currently I'm going to study engineering in Manipal or Bangalore and I dont know which branch I want to go for.

There is no information or knowledge about any of the various branches of engg. The simple reason is that students will take engg simply based on whats hot and whats not. Individual interests very rarely matter - they are not encouraged. You are advised to go computer science engg because its the hottest option with instant job offers from Intel, Wipro and what not.

More people should read The Fountainhead. Its very tough to emulate such ideals as it propagates, but it makes for a very inspiring standard to which one should try to live upto.

Hi,,

Your friend had taken a very good decision initially of quitting the job and joing for MBA.
Money does matter to pass a luxurios life.
Now at this fulcrum of life where he can easily have all luxuries even pusing his passion and that is Marketing.
Definitely it's not as lucartive as Finance but he can excel better in Marketing field (it's his passion and he enjoys it).
Now on the other side (Finanace), even after being at a good position in a very good company and getting huge salary he will always repent for not persuing his passion.
Because money can not cull the passion but passion may cull the demand of money to an extent.

Cheers.

don't we all have these passions.. its apain when we give them up for the mundane, but then that's life is all about.. well mostly.

Well honestly to me, its a very personal decision and there is no right or wrong there!
It would depend on ones own priorities and also for each person it might change based on time frame!!
Right now Id rather go for something which is giving me a better position than money..but this might change tomorrow!!

To rajan,

You are most welcome :-)

To Confused & Baffled,

Yes,very true, there is really no information or knowledge about any of the various branches of the eng. graduation.I think ,there should be better career counselling in those terms,it should infact be a little more than the kind that happens for the eng. entrance preparation

To Muditosh,

Thanks for sharing your valuable opinion with us.

To Hiren,

Thanks for your wishes.

To Raghav,

Yes,we all have such passions but they all lose out their essence the moment we start running after money.

Hi Deepa,

If you go to my profile, you will find different blogs from me,the other ones(which are the most recent ones) are on krrish review and Einstein effect(on irrelevant ads). Now,it was just that,I changed the name of my blogs frequently, chosing a different domain name for a new topic.

Anyways, thanks for your kind comments :-)

don even know what to comment on such an act...definately, and with all ma heart i will ay that what ur friend did was a mistake...money can be earned if u have the passion..it can take u high, really high up...whats the point of getting into something only because initially the pay packet is large, but after some time u realize u are where u were, while the really passionate people are flying high???

Hi neha,

Yes,that's what I feel, but what people tend to compare in all MBA colleges,is whether the job is good enough to fetch them a good package, and some foreign trips. And most of the times, people don't want to leave IT(even who want to pursue marketing come to IT at any cost) just for the simple reason, that no other field compares to IT in terms of the huge packages the IT-stream can offer.
